Castello a Mare
The Castello a Mare is part of the Castellammare Archaeological Park, an area that since 2006 has undergone various excavation and restoration works which have brought to light most of the masonry structures of the original fortified complex. Until the 20th century, Castello a Mare was an important defensive bulwark, the scene of insurrectionary uprisings and violent battles over the centuries. Built in the Norman period, of the ancient buildings remain part of the main tower, the cylindrical tower and the entrance block. The building probably had a quadrilateral layout with wide and deep moats, an entrance door and rooms where the lord of the manor and troops lived. There were also two churches, one adjacent to the Cala, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and another facing the city, and also dating back to the Norman period, dedicated to S. Pietro la Bagnara.
