Mikveh

The Mikveh is a Jewish ritual bath, mainly used by women: after menstruation and childbirth, the women descended into an underground room full of water, reachable by means of about ten steps each twenty centimetres high, to fully soak and thus purify themselves. The water of the Mikveh had to be pure, i.e., spring water, river water or even rainwater, as long as not collected in containers. A Mikveh was also found in Palermo, in the atrium of Palazzo Marchesi, in the area today corresponding to that between BallarĂ² and Sant’Anna la Misericordia ai Lattarini.
