The Capuchin Catacombs

The cemetery of the Capuchin Friars’ Convent, known as the Catacombs of the Capuchins of Palermo, is one of the most impressive places in the world because of the state of conservation of the corpses which can be seen here and which represent magnificent examples of the ancient tradition of mummification. The excavations of these Catacombs began in 1597, and they currently house forty-five naturally mummified bodies, standing in niches all around the walls of the first corridor of the Catacombs.
